Cocoon | Pavilion Design, Ignite Festival, 2015

Cocoon
Team: Amanda Nogier, Max Amerongen, Danielle Soneff
Exhibited:Sept 2015, Shaw Centre, Edmonton

The Project:
The original call for the Ignite Edmonton Festival Pavilion Design Competition
was an open call to Edmonton-based artists issued by the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation for a temporary pavilion design for Ignite Edmonton Festival, held at the Shaw Conference Centre in September 2015. Design teams were to develop and fabricate seven, site-specific, amazing and original pavilions that will host festival master classes, workshops and a relaxing lounge.

Design:
The Cocoon pulls from contemporary urban architecture vernacular to create an enclosed productive environment. The openness of the form serves to draw people into the conversations within. From the inside, the Cocoon puts inhabitants at ease, analogous to a small urban park in the midst of a metropolis. The dome delineates the boundary between the organic, interior space and the structured outside world through materials and form. Recycled vinyl signage and living panels enclose the space encouraging users to feel relaxed and comfortable while the structure takes shape of the tight mathematical form of the hypotrochoid. Like an urban pocket park, Cocoon is a cozy little space for discussion, thought and reflection.

Design Parameters:
Masterclass: MC1 & MC2
Capacity: Seating for 100 attendees
Size: 40’ x 40’ (maximum perimeter, although space does not have to be a box shape) Considerations: Sound bleed as sessions taking place concurrently in all spaces and at mainstage, temporary walls, speakers and projection screens.
Ensure artwork does not pose a risk of injury to the public (example: sharp points, slip hazards, etc.);
Meet fire codes with respect to flammability, etc.;
Pavilion must not interfere with the operation and serviceability of the building;
Pavilion must be constructed of durable, semi-permanent materials.

Activity:
In order to ensure the safety of the pavilion we pre-built in an empty lot set for development in the future. This gave us the opportunity to work through any problems that arose with the construction and test its strength
